1. The 2017 Tongyeong International Music Festival
The 2017 Tongyeong International Music Festival will take place at the Tongyeong Concert Hall and other venues in the city from March 31 until April 9.
Under the slogan, “From Asia to the World,” the 2017 Tongyeong International Music Festival will kick off with an opening concert featuring the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra. Cellist Nicholas Altstaedt is set to perform the Cello Concerto composed by Yun Isang, while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 will be performed by soprano Lee Myung-joo, mezzo-soprano Ursula Hesse von den Steinen, tenor Bernhard Berchthold, and baritone Daniel Schmutzhartd, along with the Ansan Municipal Choir. Other performers include cellists Mischa Maisky and Jens Peter Maintz, soprano Annette Dasch, as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Ensemble, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Arditti Quartet and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. As such, the star-studded performance lineup is expected to attract a large audience to the festival.
A variety of music pieces composed by Korean composer Yun Isang, who was born in Tongyeong and achieved an international prominence, will be performed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. A music ensemble comprised of German musicians such as oboist Ingo Goritzki and cellist Jens Peter Maintz, who are especially well-versed in Yun Isang’s music, as well as the Yun Isang Soloists Berlin will present Yun Isang’s Loyang for ensemble and a short concerto in addition to a wide range of contemporary music pieces. On April 6, in particular, Yun’s opera “Der Traum des Liu-Tung” will be staged at the Tongyeong Concert Hall.
Star cellist Jens Peter Maintz, known for his exquisite interpretation of Yun Isang’s music, will be performing music by Bach and Yun. Also, the Arditti Quartet, one of the foremost contemporary music string quartet, is scheduled to perform Yun’s String Quartet No. 3 and String Quartet No. 4 as well as the most recent string quartet composed by Park Young-hee and quartets by Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa and French composer Philippe Manoury.
That’s not all. There will be various other events and performances including the Asian Composer Showcase, through which young composers of Asia are discovered and introduced together with the German Culture Center, The Golden Dragon, an opera written by Péter Eötvös, staged by Music Theatre Wales and the British Council, and C’est si bon where jazz musicians perform French chansons to pay tribute to the late French jazz guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt. Plus, Chung Myung-hwa, Son Yeol-eum, and Shin Ji-ah will give performances at the Pyeongchang Daegwallyeong Music Festival in Tongyeong, as part of the exchange program between the Tongyeong International Music Festival and the Pyeongchang Daegwallyeong Music Festival organizers.The closing concert of the 2017 Tongyeong International Music Festival will feature the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. They are set to perform Yun Isang’s Clarinet Concerto and Fanfare and Memorial for orchestra with harp and flute as well as Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The audience can expect a fantastic and magnificent finale. In addition to the official performances and concerts, there will be fringe performances taking place all over the city to make the 2017 Tongyeong International Music Festival accessible to everyone.
2. The 18th Majapahit Travel Fair 2017
The government of East Java and the East Java Tourism Office will hold the 18th Majapahit Travel Fair (MTF) 2017 at the Grand City Surabaya Mall & Convex in Surabaya, Indonesia.The MTF is expected to enhance the contribution of the tourism sector to regional development, create business opportunities, and develop the diverse events and tourism attractions in East Java.
3. Kagoshima, the 4th Lantern Festival of Cherry Blossom
Kagoshima, situated on the southern tip of Kyushu, Japan, will be hosting the 4th Lantern Festival of Cherry Blossom from March 31 to April 2.
The festival will take place on the “Street of History and Romance along the Kotsuki River, which is about a 5-min walk from Kagoshima-Chuo Station located in the heart of the city. Under 500 cherry trees bearing beautiful cherry blossoms, a lot of diverse booths will be situated, selling traditional local liquor and food. In addition, live concerts will add to the amusement.
In the evening, the visitors will be enthralled by the fantastic spectacles created with a blend of cherry blossoms, lanterns made of Japanese traditional paper “washi,” and Japanese traditional umbrellas.Meanwhile, there will be a lantern contest under the theme of “Wa (??, ‘Harmony’),” which is considered an important part of Japanese identity. The event is expected to draw a lot of attention and participation from the local residents and tourists.
4. Gimhae, set to host the 41st Gaya Culture Festival
The 41st Gaya Culture Festival, one of the most iconic festivals of Gimhae, Korea, will be held around Daeseongdong Ancient Tombs on April 7 to 11.
The slogan of the festival is “A New Take-off of the Gaya Kingdom.” The main programs include the King Suro Parade, the Gaya Warriors on Horseback experience, and the Gimhae Rope-tugging, which will bring the citizens together in union and illustrate the beautiful love story of King Kim Suro of Geumgwan Gaya and Heo Hwang-ok, a princess from the Ayuta Kingdom in India.
The Sureungwon Garden is transformed into Gaya Experience Village, where visitors can experience the lifestyle of Gaya people and enjoy a performance of martial arts on horses and on the ground that demonstrates the bravery of the Gaya people. In addition, they can enjoy the horseback riding and farming experience programs.
20 ambassadors to Korea will be invited to experience the diverse programs of the festival, with the purpose of promoting Gimhae as the “Gaya Kingdom.”
The Gyeongnam Folk Art Festival will be held in connection with the Gaya Culture Festival. In the Folk Art Festival, there will be competitions among the representatives from all the counties of the province and the performances by artists, who have been designated as intangible cultural heritage for their artistry, and by arts organizations from sister cities of Gimhae all over the world. As such, the excellence of the Gaya Culture Festival with the insight into history and traditional culture will be recognized worldwide.
Visitors will get a chance to try the delicious foods from Gimhae 5-day Market and restaurants in the famous street alleys as well as the Gimhae 9 Flavors PR Booth and food trucks.The organizing committee has shown their resolution to make thorough preparations for the main programs and other events in order that the visitors want to revisit the festival year after year.
5. The 2017 Shenyang (China) Theme Park, Children's Park, Arcade & Amusement Equipment Expo
The 2017 Shenyang (China) Theme Park, Children's Park, Arcade & Amusement Equipment Expo will be held at the Shenyang Huanggu Sports Center on April 14 to 16, as a way to better meet the increasing demand for theme parks, children’s parks and amusement facilities at tourist sites.
There will be exhibitions related to playgrounds for children and park facilities as well as video products presented at the expo, with the participation of game-related media companies and human resources training centers as well as publishing, lottery game, and software companies.The expo, held under the theme of “Amusement and Leisure Industry and Start-ups,” is expected to serve as a platform for boosting trade in the related industries and for China to lead the global amusement industry.
6. The 7th China (Zhejiang) Arts and Crafts Boutique Exposition
The 7th China (Zhejiang) Premium Crafts and Arts Fair will be held at the Hangzhou Peace International Convention and Exhibition Center from April 15 to 18, 2017. The fair will be jointly organized and sponsored by the Zhejiang Arts & Crafts Association, Zhejiang Arts and Crafts Magazine, and Zhejiang Haofan Art Appraisal Center. Artworks including sculptures, drawnwork, pottery works, writing tools, hand-held fans, carpets, knitted goods, metal crafts, toys, paintings and crafts will be on display at the fair, and they will also be available for sale. The members of the Zhejiang Arts & Crafts Association as well as artists will participate in the fair, with the aim of promoting the excellence of crafts and art of Huangzhou to the people outside the region.
7. Ipoh Cycle Festival 2017
The stage has been set to blow your mind with Malaysia’s biggest bicycle festival that is back for its second edition come April 2017 in conjunction with Visit Perak Year 2017. The event is jointly organized by both X Camp Adventure Sdn Bhd and Destination Perak Sdn Bhd, and it promises an entire week of high energy and adrenaline pumping action for all ages.The Ipoh Cycle Fest highlights 17 main events which include ICF Bike Expo, Friday Night Fixie, Fat Bike Cross Cup, Junior Cup, Ipoh Cycle Fest 2017 Night Ride, and etc. The whole festival is set to kick off with the inaugural premiere of the Gran Fondo New York Championship in Malaysia.
